Stephen Venables

Editors’ note: Stephen Venables is best known for his part in the 1988 Anglo-American-Canadian expedition that made a spectacular new route up Mount Everest’s biggest wall, the Kangshung Face. There were only four climbers on the team, and Stephen was the only one to make it all the way to the summit, without supplementary oxygen. However, some of his most rewarding expeditions have been to little-known peaks in remote valleys. His Himalayan first ascents include Kishtwar Shivling, Panch Chuli V, Solu Tower, Chorten Peak, and Ngabong Terong—the last two climbed solo—as well as new routes on Pungpa Ri and Kusum Kanguru. He has also climbed extensively in the European Alps, Africa, and South America. In recent years Venables has co-led several yacht-based expeditions to Antarctica and South Georgia with the internationally renowned yachtsman Skip Novak. During an earlier visit to the island, he took part in the giant-screen movie Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure with Conrad Anker and Reinhold Messner. He also wrote the screenplay for the giant-screen movie The Alps and has appeared in television documentaries for BBC, ITV, and National Geographic. Venables is a former president of the world’s oldest mountaineering institution, The Alpine Club. He has published twelve books, the first of which, Painted Mountains, won the prestigious Boardman Tasker Prize. More recently both Himalaya Alpine Style and his autobiography, Higher Than the Eagle Soars, won prizes at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival.
